Harlequin Ducks are usually found near turbulent water. They nest on the shore of mountain streams in the Cascades and Olympics, and winter along rocky saltwater coastline.

The north Olympic Peninsula is a great place for winter birding. Scan the shoreline for large concentrations of Ancient Murrelets, Pacific Loons, Long-tailed Ducks, and other waterfowl. Looking for shorebirds on the coastal mudflats, and be sure to look for songbirds, including Snow Buntings.
